Nulo partners, Madison Chock and Evan Bates, are three-time World Champions and Olympic gold medalists in ice dance for Team USA. Known for their seamless partnership, they represent what they call "the most artistic sport in the Olympic movement"—combining athleticism, artistry, and storytelling. Madison moved from California to Michigan at age 13 to pursue ice dance, where she met Michigan-born Evan. They initially competed against each other with different partners before joining forces in 2011 and developing into one of the world's most decorated ice dance teams, with their sights set on their fourth Olympics together in Milan 2026.
Off the ice, Madison and Evan tied the knot in Hawaii in 2023. Their family includes Henry, a 9-year-old toy poodle, and Stella, a 13-year-old toy poodle. Before they were even a couple, Evan had Stella, and Madison had Henry, each bringing their own furry family member into their relationship to form one close-knit unit. The four now travel everywhere together – the rink, the gym, Pilates, and yoga sessions – and Madison and Evan confidently choose Nulo to fuel their many adventures. Here’s what they had to say about the roles Henry and Stella play in their lives, both on and off the ice.
Tell us about Henry and Stella and how they became part of your family.
Henry is 9, and Stella is 13, and they are our toy poodles and our biggest supporters. As the story goes, Henry chose Madison, and Madison chose Henry. Madison had always wanted a dog of her own and specifically had the name Henry in mind. Henry's middle name is Tiberius because he just seemed like he deserved a really interesting middle name. Stella has been part of Evan’s family since she was born from his parents' dog, and Evan took her in when Stella was 2 years old after his brother and sister-in-law grew their family of humans.
Henry loves to play; he'll play fetch with you for hours. Stella loves to cuddle, but only at our feet. They see us every day at our happiest, at our worst, and never fail to put a smile on our faces, even after a long day of training. They come to the rink with us—they're little mascots for the rink and brighten everyone's spirit in the locker room. They're our kids.
How do you approach nutrition as elite athletes, and why do you want the same quality for Henry and Stella?
Nutrition is a key part of being an elite athlete. It's so fundamental to your recovery, your training on the ice or in the gym. It fuels you, and it's really important to give your body the best possible fuel. It's no secret that nutrition keeps us performing at our best, and that's why we feed our dogs Nulo. We want them to perform their best when they're supporting us on the sidelines and when we're deep in playtime and walking around our neighborhoods. Training at an elite level every day is very challenging, and Henry and Stella provide the much-needed mental support for us on a daily basis. They bring our spirits up, they bring happiness to everyone around them, and they're a key part of our success on and off the ice.
What does a typical training day look like with Henry and Stella?
When we're getting geared up for a major competition, we usually start our day with Nulo for the dogs, then we all head to the rink. We'll train for about four or five hours on the ice, take the dogs out for a little break, and then we'll head to the gym or the pilates or yoga studio where we'll continue our off-ice training. Henry and Stella are always so excited for mealtime! They love the wide variety of Nulo treats available to them. That’s probably their favorite part– the meal toppers, the range of kibbles. They're super excited to have their snack break in between training sessions.
Tell us more about your creative process and your goals together.
Our creative process is deeply collaborative: we choose our music, work with our coaches to develop a creative vision, then bring that vision to life through choreography on the ice. It's something we're continually refining every day in training. And then Madison designs our costumes to bring the entire program together.
Our goals heading into the next Olympics are to deliver our vision, our artistic expression of what we believe ice dance should be, and to savor this experience and represent our country, our families, and our team as best we can. For us, the biggest challenge to winning is staying focused and remembering that it’s our job on the ice to execute, and that’s all that matters.
